Aldactone is a diuretic that conserves potassium, helping your body to avoid excessive salt absorption and maintaining healthy potassium levels.
Aldactone is utilized to diagnose or treat conditions characterized by excess aldosterone in the body. Aldosterone is a hormone secreted by the adrenal glands that assists in regulating the balance of salt and water. Additionally, Aldactone addresses fluid retention (edema) associated with congestive heart failure, liver cirrhosis, or a kidney issue known as nephrotic syndrome. It is also prescribed to treat or prevent hypokalemia (low potassium levels in the bloodstream).
Avoid using Aldactone if you have kidney disease, difficulties with urination, or elevated potassium levels in your blood. Do not take potassium supplements or other diuretics concurrently with Aldactone.
Before starting this medication, inform your doctor if you have liver disease or if you are using steroids or another diuretic. It's advisable to refrain from consuming alcohol, as it may heighten some side effects of Aldactone. Additionally, steer clear of a diet high in salt; excessive salt will lead your body to retain water and could undermine the effectiveness of this medication. Do not use salt substitutes or low-sodium dairy products containing potassium, as these could elevate your potassium levels while using Aldactone.
Be cautious about overheating or dehydration during exercise and in hot weather. Adhere to your doctor’s guidance regarding the appropriate type and volume of fluids to consume. In certain situations, consuming too much liquid can pose risks similar to those of not drinking enough. If you're being treated for high blood pressure, continue taking this medication even if you feel well, as high blood pressure often presents without obvious symptoms.
Do not take Aldactone if you have: kidney disease or difficulty urinating; high potassium levels (hyperkalemia); or if you are using potassium supplements or other potassium-sparing diuretics like Aldactazide, amiloride, or triamterene.
Before using Aldactone, inform your doctor if you have: heart disease or liver disease. If any of these conditions apply, you might require a dosage adjustment or specific tests to safely use Aldactone.
Potential side effects of Aldactone include headache, diarrhea, cramps, drowsiness, rash, nausea, vomiting, impotence, irregular menstrual cycles, and unusual hair growth. There might also be an imbalance of fluids and electrolytes (such as low sodium, low magnesium, and high potassium), necessitating close monitoring of patients. Breast enlargement (gynecomastia) may occur and is associated with the dosage and duration of treatment, typically reversing after ceasing the use of spironolactone.
